F♯ begins as a static point of focus—obstinate, exposed, difficult to ignore.

Against C, F♯ forms the tritone: the pitch at the opposite pole of the octave. That opposition becomes increasingly important as the work moves toward C major.

For now, F♯ is simply there: insistence before we know what is insisting.

A four-note idea appears in fragments distributed among singers. Through hocket, disconnected pieces begin to reveal a phrase that exists only when the ensemble completes it together.

At first the melody is merely implied. With Lux aeterna, its identity becomes clear.

Later, nearly the same four notes return beneath Requiem aeternam. The musical memory remains even when the words change.

Light and rest begin occupying the same world.

“Alas! that men must see Love, before Death” enters over a persistent five-eighth-note measure grouped 2 + 3.

The asymmetry becomes strangely familiar. The music can feel almost static while remaining perpetually unsettled.

The melody begins by outlining A minor, while the opening of each succeeding measure gradually rises by diatonic step—as though the phrase itself were reaching toward a lover’s response.

Later this same material appears in major tonalities. Its identity survives. Its surroundings have changed.

Deland gives us the image of a “deepening stain.” The score takes her literally.

The piano opens an ever-shifting meditative matrix while the upper voices leave gentle glissandi—smudges of sound—through the texture.

Beneath them, lower voices transform material heard earlier with Lux aeterna and Requiem aeternam.

The original musical cells are no longer independent themes. They have become an ecosystem.

The sopranos rise toward C major, the tonal world standing opposite the opening F♯.

Then the score begins surrendering control.

Each section receives a common phrase and knows when to enter, but no singer is asked to perform it exactly like another. Within the key and meter, each person may begin transforming the material.

The piece has moved from one shared pitch, to fragmented melody, to near-unison, to counterpoint—and finally to individuality within a common harmonic world.

As the texture grows, another voice reveals itself: Do–Ti–So–Fa.

Joy has been woven into the piece all along.
