Love’s Insistent Voice
Margaret Deland’s “Love and Death” meets the language of the Latin Requiem—two textual worlds held in one musical argument.

SACRA PROFANA performs the third movement from Three Weber Sonnets.
Current cycle · four voices
Four Songs
of Love
and Death
Four poets ask the same impossible question from four different directions: what remains when love meets absence, injury, mortality, and time?
The cycle is built as four distinct vocal worlds rather than four variations on a single sound. Each text brings its own emotional temperature and its own choral texture: mixed voices, lower voices in inner dialogue, treble voices, and finally the full choir again. Open a title to move inside the poem and the life behind it.

My silence, life returns to thee
SATB · Alice Meynell
My silence, life returns to thee
The beloved inhabits the pauses of ordinary life: an inward presence heard between sorrow and laughter.
In the final two stanzas of “To the Beloved,” outward sound gives way to inward listening. Darkness and solitude become luminous; the beloved is felt within thought, melody, and prayer. The SATB setting gives space to that attention, letting silence carry its own presence.
The text · final two stanzas
Darkness and solitude shine, for me.
For life’s fair outward part are rife
The silver noises; let them be.
It is the very soul of life
Listens for thee, listens for thee.
O pause between the sobs of cares;
O thought within all thought that is;
Trance between laughters unawares:
Thou art the shape of melodies,
And thou the ecstasy of prayers!

El sueño de la nada
TTBB · Rosalía de Castro
El sueño de la nada
The passions seem buried, yet something still burns. Pleasure and pain speak from the same inner life.
Rosalía de Castro’s eight-line poem holds a contradiction: feeling wounds the speaker, yet its absence would extinguish life itself. Conceived as an inner dialogue for TTBB, El sueño de la nada lets the choir voice the competing impulses of one consciousness—stillness, doubt, pain, and the need to keep the flame alive.
The text · Spanish original
Ya duermen en su tumba las pasiones
el sueño de la nada;
¿es, pues, locura del doliente espíritu,
o gusano que llevo en mis entrañas?
Yo sólo sé que es un placer que duele,
que es un dolor que atormentando halaga,
llama que de la vida se alimenta,
mas sin la cual la vida se apagara.

I Want to Die While You Love Me
SSAA · Georgia Douglas Johnson
I Want to Die While You Love Me
A perfect day is made unbearable by the knowledge that it cannot remain perfect forever.
Johnson’s repeated opening line turns desire into ritual. The poem resists the erosion of love: the speaker would rather preserve one blazing instant than live to see its radiance diminish.
The text
I want to die while you love me,
While yet you hold me fair,
While laughter lies upon my lips
And lights are in my hair.
I want to die while you love me,
And bear to that still bed,
Your kisses turbulent, unspent
To warm me when I’m dead.
I want to die while you love me
Oh, who would care to live
Till love has nothing more to ask
And nothing more to give?
I want to die while you love me
And never, never see
The glory of this perfect day
Grow dim or cease to be!

Love and Death
The cycle ends by reversing its premise: death may promise rest, but love refuses to let the self disappear.
Deland’s poem begins by imagining death as release from labor and pain. Then love interrupts. Its “insistent voice” makes endurance an obligation to another person—an ending that is less consoling than fiercely human.
The text
Alas! that men must see
Love, before Death!
Else they content might be
With their short breath;
Aye, glad, when the pale sun
Showed restless day was done,
And endless Rest begun.
Glad, when with strong, cool hand
Death clasped their own,
And with a strange command
Hushed every moan;
Glad to have finished pain,
And labor wrought in vain,
Blurred by Sin’s deepening stain.
But Love’s insistent voice
Bids self to flee—
“Live that I may rejoice,
Live on, for me!”
So, for Love’s cruel mind,
Men fear this Rest to find,
Nor know great Death is kind!
Four titles. Four bodies of sound. Four different ways love refuses to remain simple.
SATB · TTBB · SSAA · SATB. The changing voicing is part of the dramatic design: lower voices carry an inner dialogue, gives way to treble voices, and returns in the final movement.

Four Poems of Love and Death
Love does not speak with one voice in these four poems. It waits, protests, preserves and finally insists.
Kenneth Martin has given each poet her own choral body, allowing the character of the text to determine not only the harmony, but the very configuration of voices through which it is heard.
The cycle moves through four distinct emotional landscapes. Alice Meynell’s private longing is held within the full SATB ensemble. Rosalía de Castro’s divided inner life unfolds as a TTBB dialogue between pain and sustaining passion. Georgia Douglas Johnson’s desire to preserve love at its height is entrusted to treble voices. In the final movement, the entire choir returns as Love interrupts Death’s promise of rest.
These are not four isolated miniatures. Each movement changes how we hear the one that follows. Longing becomes inner conflict; conflict becomes preservation; preservation gives way to an insistent return toward life.
My silence, life returns to thee
Alice Meynell · “To the Beloved” (excerpt)
The soul listens for the beloved within silence, finding presence between sorrow, laughter, and prayer.
El sueño de la nada
Rosalía de Castro · “Ya duermen en su tumba las pasiones”
Passion seems buried, yet its flame remains: a pleasure that hurts, and a pain without which life would go out.
The Perfect Day
Georgia Douglas Johnson · “I Want to Die While You Love Me”
Love is imagined at its fullest moment, preserved before time, change or fading can diminish it.
Love’s Insistent Voice
Margaret Deland
The full choir returns as Love interrupts Death’s promise of stillness and calls the living back toward life.
